  7.     A sword cracked at the wrong time, and one singer nearly
  8. tripped while running across the stage. But last week critics
  9. were hailing Luciano Pavarotti's directorial debut at Venice's
  10. Teatro La Fenice in Gaetano Donizetti's difficult opera La
  11. Favorita. Originally invited to perform, not to be boss, the
  12. singer had brashly told Teatro officials, "I will come, but not
  13. to sing. I want to direct." At the curtain calls, however,
  14. Pavarotti was humility itself, bowing to the audience with hands
  15. folded in front of him like a bashful schoolboy. Said the
  16. astonished star of his experience: "Technicians and singers were
  17. actually following my orders!" It helps when the director can
  18. belt one out louder than most of the cast.
